The theme of David's work is to contrast man-made forms with organic qualities in the natural landscape. His observed studio objects become a geometric structure against a backcloth of the ever-changing moods and power of nature. Influences on his work have been many and varied but the common factor has been their power of emotional impact, from the stained-glass windows of Chartres to the quiet spirituality of a Rothko. He finds inspiration from artists as diverse as JMW Turner and Georges Braque.
"I try to put into each work the intensity of my feelings by contrasting human geometry with the dynamic forces of nature. My mixed-media paintings begin with collage materials fixed with PVA adhesive on board to create a range of textures. I seal this with varnish before applying the rich, vibrant colours of oil-based inks. This method has allowed me to explore a variety of outcomes in which each painting is a distinctive abstract design". David White |
