James Fraser
James Fraser was born in Glasgow in 1958 and after a career in the Civil Service gained a place as a mature student at Edinburgh College of Art in 1999. He was awarded the Heriot Watt University award for outstanding merit in his first year and received his BA (Hons) in painting from ECA in 2004.
His subject matter is varied and James uses a whole range of materials in his working method. Within this variation, however, he regards the aesthetic quality of the finished work paramount.
James has regularly exhibited at various galleries throughout Scotland and at the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA), Royal Society of Watercolourists (RSW), Paisley Art Institute (PAI) and the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts (RGI) annual exhibitions. In August 2006 he was elected a professional member of Visual Arts Scotland (VAS) and he is also an Ordinary member of Society of Scottish Artists. His work is now in many private collections.
We are pleased to be introducing five of James' most recent small still life paintings at the Purple Gallery Christmas show.

Chris Haywood
Chris studied Fine Art at the University of Central England in Birmingham, specialising in painting and drawing. It was whilst studying in the city centre that he became interested in the urban landscape and his work examined the figure within the city. In recent years, the human presence has largely been eliminated from his work and it now focuses on the architecture and landscape.

Ellie Hesse
Ellie Hesse has painted professionally for over 10 years. She has more recently been focussing on the horse as an artistic subject - bringing about her two great passions in life - that of art and all things equine!.
Concurrently, Ellie began experimenting with new media, feeling intuitively that her hand required more freedom of movement. This process of "freeing up" was aided by the temporary abandonment of the palette knife in favour of charcoal and a more fluid use of paint. Techniques that allow her to work more sensitively and freely in capturing her new subject's expression and movement.
Blue Horses I, II & III
Mixed Media
Sizes 30 cm x 30 cm each
The resulting collection of work reflects Ellie's deep love and long standing fascination with horses. Their form, emotion and movement, providing her with a powerful source of inspiration. Purple Gallery introduces three small works which may be purchased individually or as a triptych. |
Olivia Pilling
Olivia completed a BA in Fine Art at Nottingham Trent University in 2008. She finds inspiration for her paintings in small industrial town landscapes and architecture. Having lived in the same farmhouse in rural North West England throughout her life, it seems natural to her, to paint her surroundings. Olivia sees the rolling hills, valleys, mills and towering chimneys of the landscape coming together to form natural abstract shapes and linear lines. She uses these naturally occuring patterns in her landscape paintings to create paintings which ride a fine line between spontaneity - with gestural brushstrokes - and calculation and control.

Kevin Warren
Kevin Warren is a potter who works in earthenware and soda glazed pottery. He studied at the Medway College of Art and Design and trained with studio potter Mike Goddard for four years. In 1982 Kevin set up his own workshop making ash glazed stoneware, a range of terracotta garden pots and some decorated slipware. |
|
In the spring of 2000 Kevin built his own sprung arch soda kiln and began to produce a range of domestic ware which has been very popular in galleries across the country. Kevin uses sgraffito decoration on his well-made, simple and functional pottery, which often features garden birds.
Purple Gallery has a range of jugs, bowls, mugs and lidded pots in stock in both the Bluebird and Blackbird designs. |
Philip Wong
Philip was born in Cardiff in 1967 and graduated with a BA Honours in Fine Art at Birmingham Institute of Art in 1992. Landscapes and the sea are recurring themes in his work. He takes inspiration directly from nature and visually studying the environment - whether it’s the local park, the beautiful countryside or the beach on holiday. He works from personal photographs which often serve as a starting point for his paintings. Philip is more interested in creating a feeling or mood, rather than attempting to create a literal representation of a place, as this allows him to paint more freely. He work predominantly on a small scale as this invites a certain intimacy between the viewer and the image. |
