Colin Carruthers    Louis Parsons
Richard Clare   Ian MacCulloch
Terence Clarke Lesley Whelan
NEW ARTIST - Suzanne Stuart Davies

Suzanne attended Liverpool College of Art, qualifying and working as an art teacher. She also has a degree in Philosophy and History of Art from the Open University.

Suzanne has always been interested in the way people throughout history have adapted, lived, worked and built shelters in often harsh and difficult, but beautiful terrain. No surprise then that she lives and works in Scotland!

Suzanne is exhibiting for the first time in Birmingham and her current work will be on display in the gallery until the end of September. Some of her paintings are of isolated crofts and cottages of the Western Highlands. They show show naive, painterly qualities and a wonderful sensitivity to the colours that are very distinct to the Highlands.

CERAMICS - New Porcelain Work from Richard Baxter

Richard Baxter is a well known British potter producing highly individual and collectable ceramic art. He has been a professional potter since 1981, when he graduated with a First in 3-D Design (Ceramics) from Loughborough College of Art and Design.

Richard worked in terracotta as a student, emphasising the effects that stretching, compressing, cutting, pushing and joining have on the material. Pots were heavily thrown with minimal slip-trailing and glazing of insides and were nominally functional. Main influences were traditional English and Japanese country pottery.

Purple Gallery showcases a variety of Richard's coloured porcelain bowls and vases which are thrown using Limoges porcelain and are fired to 1240c in an electric kiln. Porcelain is a very strong clay, which means that the pots can be very thin and apparently fragile whilst remaining durable. The thinness of the pottery gives a sense of lightness which is further enhanced by the translucent quality of fine porcelain.
